VVV-WIT-08: the giant star that blinked

چکیده

We report the serendipitous discovery of a late-type giant star that exhibited smooth, eclipse-like drop in flux to depth 97 per cent. Minimum occurred April 2012 and total event duration was few hundred days. Light curves V, I K$_s$ from Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment VISTA Variables Via Lactea surveys show remarkably achromatic event. During 17 years observational coverage this source only one such detected. The physical properties itself appear somewhat unusual, which may ultimately provide clue towards nature system. By modelling as an occultation by object is elliptical projection with uniform transparency, we place limits on its size velocity. find unlikely be due chance alignment foreground object. consider number possible candidates for occulter, must optically thick possess radius or thickness excess 0.25 au. None are completely satisfactory matches all data. duration, relative achromaticity dip mark out exceptionally unusual event, whose secret has still not been fully revealed. two further VVV survey suggest these systems, previously known examples, point broad class long period eclipsing binaries wherein occulted circumsecondary disc.

The Different Physical Mechanisms that Drive the Star-Formation Histories of Giant and Dwarf Galaxies

We present an analysis of star-formation and nuclear activity in galaxies as a function of both luminosity and environment in the fourth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR4). Using a sample of 27 753 galaxies in the redshift range 0.005<z<0.037 that is &90% complete to Mr = −18.0 we find that the EW(Hα) distribution is strongly bimodal, allowing galaxies to be robustly separa...

Eccentric giant planets in open star clusters

The discovery of Jupiter–like planets with high eccentricities raises the question of how these eccentricities are produced. We propose that eccentric giant planets (EGPs) could be formed in open star clusters as a result of purely dynami-cal processes. It is found that at least 3% of the giant planets around stars in open clusters can develop high eccentricities due to multi-body gravitational...

Blinked Data: Concepts, Characteristics, and Challenges

Big Data is a generic concept which can be specialized to promote efficiency in development of context-specific applications. By generalizing data with its four characteristics, Big Data hide some important issues such as characteristics of particular data which are critical to certain types of applications such as analytic, query processing etc.. The specificity helps in focusing on particular...

Star cluster disruption by giant molecular clouds

We investigate encounters between giant molecular clouds (GMCs) and star clusters. We propose a single expression for the energy gain of a cluster due to an encounter with a GMC, valid for all encounter distances and GMC properties. This relation is verified with N -body simulations of cluster-GMC encounters, where the GMC is represented by a moving analytical potential. Excellent agreement is ...

Iris Feature Extraction of a blinked eye

With compare to biometric features, iris recognition has high recognition accuracy. This paper proposed different methods for iris recognition in which condition is partial eye closed or an eye is blinked. All the steps are explained in detail to achieve highest accuracy rate in the recognition system. Most of the iris recognition systems are incapable of providing low false rejection due to wi...
